Choi Ji-woo Returns to Screen with ‘Sugar’ Fighting for Her Son with Type 1 Diabetes

Actress Choi Ji-woo

Actress Choi Ji-woo returns to the screen after three years with the movie ‘Sugar’ directed by Choi Shin-chun.

‘Sugar’ is a human drama based on a true story about a mother, Mira, who creates medical devices herself to overcome legal and regulatory barriers for her son diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. It portrays her intense love and growth.

In the film, Choi Ji-woo plays the role of Mira, a mother confronting the world to protect her son.

Through this work, she sheds her existing image as a melodrama queen and plans to showcase a strong maternal love that is willing to risk everything for her child.

Choi Ji-woo’s sincere and genuine performance, stripped of glamour, is expected to deeply resonate with audiences.

Having recently connected with the public through various entertainment programs, Choi Ji-woo has secured her position as the ‘nation’s sister’ by honestly discussing parenting and showcasing her human charm.

‘Sugar’ expands this ‘human Choi Ji-woo’ authenticity onto the screen, a decision she made volunteering to portray the very real struggles families of children with Type 1 diabetes face. She related strongly to the desperation to protect one’s child as a mother herself.

Produced by Shin Chang-hwan, the producer behind many hits including ‘Marathon’ and ‘Hansan,’ the film’s quality is further assured.

Director Choi Shin-chun expressed high expectations, stating, “The energy actress Choi Ji-woo displays is beyond imagination. Her strength and passionate maternal love align perfectly with the character Mira. It will be the most amazing and heartwarming chapter in her acting career.”

Meanwhile, ‘Sugar’ will be released to audiences in January 2026.
