Actor Jo Jin-woong’s retirement could lead to a penalty of up to 10 billion won, according to industry predictions. On the 9th, Newsen reported that if tvN files a lawsuit against Jo Jin-woong and his agency, the penalty could reach this amount.
Jo was set to star in the drama ‘Signal 2,’ scheduled for a release in the first half of next year. However, allegations arose on the 5th regarding Jo’s juvenile offenses. Jo’s team confirmed, “After checking with the actor, it was confirmed that there was some misconduct during his youth,” partially acknowledging the accusations.
On the 6th, Jo announced, “I humbly accept the criticism and have decided to end all activities and conclude my acting career today. It is a rightful responsibility and duty for my past mistakes.”
The controversy around Jo has significantly impacted ‘Signal 2.’ As a sequel to the highly popular 2016 drama ‘Signal,’ expectations were high for its release after nearly ten years, but its airing is now uncertain.

A representative from tvN stated, “We will discuss the schedule and deliver updates if anything is decided.”
The retirement decision has provoked mixed reactions from various sectors. On the 7th, Lee Joon-dong, known as the brother of director Lee Chang-dong, publicly supported Jo, saying, “Our society conducts frequent rituals of sacrifice. Does this make our society healthier?”
Park Beom-gye, a lawmaker from the Democratic Party of Korea, shared on his social media, “The controversy over Jo’s youthful indiscretion is significant, but his retirement announcement shocked me. Was his past something he needed to remember to prevent from happening again?”
Reverend Song Kyung-yong from the Anglican Church also urged Jo to return, writing, “Shouldn’t we support someone who lives reflecting on and accepting punishment for past wrongdoings?”
With opinions divided, the broadcaster could suffer substantial financial damages if ‘Signal 2’ does not air, raising questions about whether Jo Jin-woong will face a hefty penalty.
