Billboard Korea’s 130th Anniversary Exhibition Concludes, Bridging K-Pop’s Past and Future

Billboard Korea’s special exhibition, ‘Billboard 130: Exhibition,’ held to commemorate Billboard’s 130th anniversary, successfully concluded over two days from December 30 to 31.

The exhibition showcased Billboard’s 130-year history, which has set the standard in the global music industry since its inception in 1894. It particularly highlighted the surge of K-pop as a key force that expanded Billboard from local charts to a global platform post-2000s. Through this exhibition, Billboard Korea reinforced its role as a hub connecting the Korean music industry to the global market.

December 30, the first day, was designated as ‘Industry Day.’ More than 300 key figures from the music industry attended, including producers, entertainment officials, and artists representing the current state of K-pop. It served as a networking venue to share Billboard’s heritage, which has chronicled the history of popular music since the late 19th century, and to discuss Billboard Korea’s vision for the global growth of Korean music. Attendees reflected on the evolution of the Billboard chart system and shared insights on the sustainable future of K-pop.

On ‘Public Day,’ held on the 31st, music fans, domestic and international creators, and foreign tourists visiting Korea for the year-end flocked to the venue. Visitors experienced the development of the Billboard chart system, including the Hot 100, and K-pop’s proven status within it. It became an opportunity to witness the influence of Korean pop culture, which is loved across generations and borders.

Kim Yuna, CEO of Billboard Korea, stated, “This exhibition was an occasion to reflect on how Billboard has recorded music for 130 years and its authenticity. We appreciate everyone who joined us to review the achievements of Korean pop music on the global stage and explore future development directions together with Billboard Korea.”

Meanwhile, in December, Billboard Korea officially launched the ‘Billboard Korea Hot 100’ and ‘Billboard Korea Global K-Songs’ charts. These charts are calculated using the strict aggregation methods of Billboard headquarters, based on streaming, downloads, and broadcast data within Korea. This move is part of efforts to connect data from the Korean music market to global standards and inform the world.
