Mexico’s President Hails BTS Concert as ‘Historic,’ But TV Show Panelists Dismiss Group as ‘Unknown Singers’

The popular group BTS has confirmed their upcoming performances in Mexico, generating significant local excitement. However, excessive mockery on a television program dampened the enthusiasm.

BTS is scheduled to perform at Mexico City’s 65,000-capacity Estadio GNP Seguros on May 7, 9, and 10.

Meanwhile, a Mexican television program panelist sparked controversy and drew criticism for inappropriate remarks about BTS and their fandom. On Multimedios’ ‘Canal 6’ entertainment program ‘Chismorreo,’ panelists discussed BTS’s upcoming world tour concerts in Mexico City.

After watching a video that introduced various issues, including undisclosed seating arrangements, unclear fee structures, alleged schemes for ticket resale, and President Claudia Sheinbaum’s announcement of countermeasures, the panelists suggested that rising ticket prices for popular concerts were natural.

Panelist Luisa Fernanda stated, “Shakira’s concert in February also sold out,” adding, “Even while feeling exploited by high ticket prices, people’s judgment is only this much.”

Another panelist, Fabian Lavalle, commented, “If I had a 17-year-old daughter, I’d make her do homework instead of crying over some unknown singer.” Since BTS’s photo and video appeared on screen during his remarks, it was inferred he was referring to them.

The host countered that “many children dream of seeing BTS live,” but Fernanda made an unsubstantiated claim, “I bet half the fans haven’t even finished elementary school yet.”

The program ‘Chismorreo,’ whose title means ‘gossip,’ is known for its provocative coverage of celebrity news. However, local critics argued that the remarks crossed a line.

While derogatory comments were aired on one program, President Sheinbaum, last month, welcomed the concert, calling it a “historic moment,” which further highlighted the contrasting views.

During a regular press conference, President Sheinbaum also mentioned sending a diplomatic letter to President Lee Jae-myung to request additional BTS concerts in May. However, concert organizers responded that this was not currently possible.

Furthermore, in 2018, Mexican television programs had also mocked BTS with sexually suggestive comments, which led to public apologies.

BTS concerts are a subject of intense interest in Mexico. The recent derogatory remarks, reminiscent of those from 2018, have drawn a cold reaction from local fans.
