Ahn Hyo-seop’s Matthew Lee character is described as having the charm of ‘soboro bread’—crispy on the outside, soft on the inside.
He shared insights into his role as Matthew Lee, a perfectionist young farmer, in SBS’s new Wednesday-Thursday drama ‘Today’s Sold Out,’ set to premiere on April 22.
This project marks a noteworthy collaboration between Ahn Hyo-seop and SBS, drawing attention as it’s been a while since their last joint effort.
“Being called ‘SBS’s son’ is a bit embarrassing, yet it brings a sense of reliance and trust. It’s been a long time since I’ve done a light romantic comedy after ‘Business Proposal,’ which makes it even more exciting. I’m grateful to be part of this project,” Ahn said, acknowledging the fervent interest.
As he captivated global fans with ‘K-pop Demon Hunters,’ achieving fame as a ‘global romance comedy king,’ expectations are high for Ahn’s portrayal of a new romance comedy character.
Describing Matthew Lee’s character as ‘soboro bread,’ Ahn said, “He seems tough and cold, but inside, he has a warm heart. Though it might not show outwardly, he cares for those around him and needs affection like any friend. That’s what drew my attention to him,” as he recalled his first impression.

To portray Matthew Lee, Ahn focused on conveying strong emotions through his eyes while working. Playing a character who juggles multiple roles, including a young farmer, a raw material company CEO, and a cosmetics researcher, Ahn imagined him as professional and meticulous in his field, yet awkward in personal relationships. “He may not be perfect, but I envisioned a cute character who earnestly tries, even while being clumsy,” Ahn explained.
“Overall, the aspect I focused on the most was ‘sincerity,'” Ahn added. “Matthew Lee is sincere in everything, whether it’s his own work or people’s hearts,” fueling curiosity about his interpretation of the character.
Finally, Ahn highlighted, “This show can be enjoyed while having a meal. I believe good messages are universal. Everyone, regardless of nationality, deals with various life challenges and stress, but I hope this drama provides some solace, even temporarily, while enjoying a delicious meal,” increasing anticipation for the heartwarming excitement ‘Today’s Sold Out’ is set to deliver.
