‘Beef’ is back with Season 2.

An online press conference for Netflix’s new series ‘Beef Season 2’ was held on the morning of the 7th, attended by director Lee Sung-jin and Hollywood actor Charles Melton.

‘Beef Season 2’ follows a young couple who witness a shocking argument between their boss and his wife at an elite country club. A fierce battle of wits then ensues among the two couples and a Korean billionaire club owner.

Season 1, released in 2023, achieved significant success, securing three wins at the 81st Golden Globe Awards, eight at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, and four at the 29th Critics’ Choice Awards.

‘Beef’ returns with a new cast for its highly anticipated Season 2. Director Lee stated there is no story continuity from Season 1 but considered it a “sibling story that carries on the spirit of Season 1.”

He added, “We put a lot of effort into Season 2, surpassing even our work on Season 1. We approached it with great ambition, aiming to enhance what audiences loved about ‘Beef.’ Various Korean elements are heavily integrated. While Season 1 focused on Korean-American stories, this season explores the narrative of those rooted in Korea.”

Lee expressed a desire to tell stories about Korean chaebols, basing them on his experiences after gaining insight into the lives of Korea’s elite following the success of ‘Beef Season 1.’

“I wanted to incorporate more of Korea in this season. This idea was in my mind before writing the first word of the script. At that time, Korea’s influence in my life was growing,” he said. “After Season 1’s success, I began traveling between Korea and the U.S., even filming RM’s music video. This allowed me to closely observe the lives of Korea’s upper class and interact with K-pop idols and chaebol CEOs. I found that world fascinating and wanted to capture those Korean elements through the character of Austin.”

Charles Melton plays Austin, a junior staff member at the country club, taking on the lead role. With a Korean-American mother, Melton expressed great affection for ‘Beef Season 2.’

“It felt like coming home. I lived in Korea for about six years during my childhood, and my mother is Korean-American,” he revealed. “As someone with a Korean parent, I am grateful and inspired that such a project was written.”

He continued, “I feel indebted for being given the opportunity to play a role that connects with my Korean roots and showcase my acting.” Melton shared openly, “My name is Charles Melton, and I am very proud to be Korean.”

‘Beef Season 2’ features Youn Yuh-jung and Song Kang-ho as a couple. Director Lee explained how this casting happened: “I wanted to work with Youn Yuh-jung and Song Kang-ho, whom I consider great actors of the world. Although Song Kang-ho initially declined, Youn Yuh-jung persuaded him after he expressed doubts upon reading the script.”

Director Lee expressed gratitude for Korean viewers’ response to Season 1, saying, “I feel great pride when considering how much our small peninsula has achieved culturally on the world stage. I hope ‘Beef 2’ continues that legacy and that Korean audiences feel proud.”

Meanwhile, ‘Beef Season 2’ will be released on Netflix on the 16th.
