Actress Ha Ye-rin of ‘Bridgerton 4’ spoke about the racism controversy surrounding the series.
On the afternoon of March 4, Netflix held a press conference for ‘Bridgerton’ Season 4 at Community House Masil in Myeong-dong, Seoul. Ha Ye-rin attended the event.
‘Bridgerton 4’ is a romantic series that explores the love, identity, and class boundaries between free-spirited Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) and ‘the lady in the silver dress’ and maid Sophie Beck (Ha Ye-rin).
Ha Ye-rin, who joined ‘Bridgerton 4’, shared, “I was worried my participation might disrupt the harmony, but everyone welcomed the new energy. In my seven years of acting, this project has been the most respectful in terms of equality and diversity.”
However, during various promotions for ‘Bridgerton 4’, Ha Ye-rin faced a racism controversy after she was consistently seated last, despite being the lead actress.
Regarding the issue, Ha Ye-rin clarified, “I never felt that any situation was racist or discriminatory against individuals,” but acknowledged, “There might have been overlooked details. I don’t believe they were intentional or conscious acts.”
She also reflected, “Looking back, I can understand why people reacted that way. It’s possible to show tolerance by understanding the overlooked details of the situation.”
Ha Ye-rin added, “I see it as an opportunity for various media to learn not to overlook such details. Throughout my career, I’ve had to face certain challenges, but I found it interesting. I hope we view it as a chance to learn together, and that it doesn’t lead to excessive criticism and hatred.”
Meanwhile, ‘Bridgerton 4’ is streaming on Netflix.
