Kim Go-eun Reflects on a Year of Success: ‘It’s a Miracle to Be Continuously Loved’

Kim Go-eun

Actress Kim Go-eun reflects on a year filled with love and success.

On the morning of the 12th, an interview with Kim Go-eun from the Netflix original series ‘The Price of Confession’ took place at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul.

‘The Price of Confession’ is a mystery thriller that revolves around Yoon Soo (played by Jeon Do-yeon), who is suspected of killing her husband, and Mo-eun (played by Kim Go-eun), a mysterious figure called a witch. The plot unfolds between these two enigmatic characters.

On this day, Kim Go-eun shared her thoughts on the series’ release, saying, “I’ve heard that once people start watching, they can’t stop. I believe the important thing in a drama is to keep viewers watching consecutively, and I think the director did a great job in this regard.”

Before director Lee Jung-hyo formally proposed the project to her, Kim Go-eun had already received the script. “When I first received the script, it felt like a project in progress, and I was filming ‘Eunjung and Sangyeon’ when the proposal came. Senior Jeon Do-yeon was involved, and I remember there was an appeal in the character when I glanced at the script. That’s why I expressed my desire to be a part of it,” she explained.

The main cast and director frequently changed during ‘The Price of Confession’s’ development. However, Kim Go-eun said, “It’s common for projects to fall through after being offered to actors. Although ‘The Price of Confession’ was announced in the media and then shelved, it might have seemed more significant, but any actor has gone through similar situations, so it didn’t bother me much.”

“Initially, the character Mo-eun was intended to appear as a psychopath. However, in the middle-to-late parts of the story, the truth is revealed, and we had to deceive the viewers until then, which led to inconsistencies,” she continued. “After discussing with the director, I thought it was better if Mo-eun remained still while others misunderstood her as they see fit. Thus, we built her character as one whose emotions are completely broken. This required her backstory to be clearly depicted,” Kim Go-eun elaborated on how they shaped Mo-eun.

She praised Jeon Do-yeon, saying, “It’s fortunate to live in the same era as such a great actress,” while Kim Go-eun herself is celebrated by her peers and staff alike.

Director Jang Jae-hyun of ‘Untact’ sparked interest by saying, “I am so glad that you, Kim Go-eun, are a Korean actress, whom I respect so much.” Kim Go-eun expressed her gratitude, saying, “This is the highest praise for an actor. I wonder if I’ll hear words like this again in my career.”

Reflecting on her recent projects ‘Untact’ and ‘Love in a Big City,’ she remarked, “It’s incredibly challenging to be loved so consistently. It’s been a miraculous last year and this year,” she shared.

“I consider it close to a miracle for future projects to be continuously loved. There were times when my efforts weren’t recognized, when the performance was lackluster, so I feel resilient,” she humbly stated.

“When ‘Untact’ was successful, it felt surreal, and there were moments of disbelief while on the weekend stage-greeting bus. Although ‘Love in a Big City’ didn’t perform as well, there were plenty of positive articles and reviews, and I even won an acting award. With ‘Eunjung and Sangyeon,’ society seems to be praising me. I think these compliments will empower me for the future,” she concluded, remaining steadfast in her journey.

Meanwhile, ‘The Price of Confession,’ featuring Kim Go-eun, is streaming on Netflix.
