‘I’m a Human From Today’ will finally meet viewers after a long wait.
SBS’s new Friday-Saturday drama, ‘I’m a Human From Today’, is set to premiere on Friday, the 16th. It is a fantasy romance about an MZ-era nine-tailed fox who resists becoming human and a self-obsessed man. The series promises a unique story that blurs the lines between reality and fantasy.
Director Kim Jung-kwon stated, “I was drawn to the freshness of turning existing nine-tailed fox stories on their head, which led me to decide to direct,” raising anticipation for Kim Hye-yoon’s portrayal of the lead character, Eun-ho. Eun-ho is an MZ-era nine-tailed fox who resists becoming human, depicted as a realistic character despite her legendary and fantastical nature.
Writers Park Chan-young and Cho Ah-young commented, “Both of us have experienced moments of worry about not meeting society’s standards for adulthood. It seems many young people today share this concern.” They continued, “Few are entirely free from the societal pressures to secure a job, marry, and own a decent home by certain ages.”
They added, “Unlike us, Eun-ho boldly challenges the world’s norms that everyone takes for granted. While her actions may sometimes appear reckless and irresponsible, there are moments when her innocence and lack of planning offer us comfort and encouragement,” elucidating the sincere intent behind the drama’s concept.
High expectations surround the new SBS K-fantasy romance drama, poised to follow global hits like ‘Ghost Palace’ and ‘My Demon.’ Director Kim noted, “‘I’m a Human From Today’ is a crossover of romantic comedy and fantasy, representing a formidable challenge and adventure.” He elaborated on his directorial emphasis, stating, “My first film, ‘Ditto,’ was also a fantasy melodrama that traversed time and space. The key focus became ‘authenticity.’ The power to make seemingly absurd stories believable lies in the actors’ authentic performances.”
Kim Hye-yoon and Romen brought ‘Eun-ho’ and ‘Kang Shi-yeol’ to life through their sincere acting. “Both were rising stars even before casting, and their fresh combination in this novel drama energized me as a director,” he commented. He particularly praised Kim Hye-yoon’s greatest charm as ‘sincerity.’ He added, “While every actor gives their best, few perform with heartfelt sincerity like Kim Hye-yoon. Conversely, Romen’s charm lies in his ‘innocence.’ His pure, blank canvas-like quality is alluring.” He concluded, “Their acting compatibility and chemistry were so exceptional it felt as if they were always looking in the same direction.”
Writers Park and Cho shared, “Eun-ho might smash religious statues when upset or splash gasoline at temples when angry. However, these actions should appear adorable and ludicrous rather than threatening, conveyed with charming and lovable energy by the right actor. Kim Hye-yoon was a gift to us. We joked that it was like exhausting all our luck at once, as her uniquely charming and powerful performance proved essential for fully realizing Eun-ho. It was perfect casting.”
They recalled, “Kang Shi-yeol, portrayed by Romen, needed to convey emotions spanning his past as a high school student to his present as a top sports star. He also had to navigate the transition from being Eun-ho’s ‘enemy’ to falling in ‘love.’ We sought an actor who embodied both youthful and mature qualities. Hearing about Romen’s casting made us jump with joy.” They expressed satisfaction, stating, “Thanks to Romen’s steadfast yet charismatic presence, the character of Kang Shi-yeol seemed to leap off the script.”
Finally, Director Kim expressed, “I hope ‘I’m a Human From Today’ is viewed not merely as a story of destiny altered, but also as a work that prompts self-reflection by observing someone living a different life.”
Additionally, Writers Park and Cho stated, “The core theme of our drama is ‘loving genuinely.’ We aimed to explore whether one can love others without losing oneself and depict the characters’ growth in that process. We hope viewers will come to love Eun-ho and Kang Shi-yeol as deeply as we did.”
Meanwhile, SBS’s new Friday-Saturday drama ‘I’m a Human From Today’ premieres at 9:50 PM on Friday, the 16th.
