The preliminary nominees for the 98th Academy Awards have been announced, with director Park Chan-wook’s films ‘Hopeless’ and ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters’ making the list.

On the 16th (local time), the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) unveiled the shortlist for 12 major categories.

According to the announcement, ‘Hopeless’ has been nominated in the Best International Feature Film category alongside contenders like ‘Secret Agent,’ ‘It Was Just an Accident,’ ‘Sound of Falling,’ and ‘Sentimental Value.’

This year, Netflix’s original film ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters’ (hereafter ‘KDH’), which shook the world, has been nominated in the Best Original Song category with its track ‘Golden.’ It is also competing for Best Animated Feature and is considered a strong contender, especially given the sequel status of ‘Zootopia 2.’

Additionally, the film ‘Kokpo’ by Korean-Japanese director Lee Sang-il has been listed in both the Best International Feature Film and Best Makeup and Hairstyling categories, foreshadowing intense competition.

The final nominees will be announced on January 22 next year, and the award ceremony will take place on March 15.

Previously, ‘Hopeless’ was nominated in three categories at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards: Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for Lee Byung-hun, and Best Foreign Language Film.

‘KDH’ also secured nominations in three categories: Best Animated Feature, Best Original Song, and Best Made Blockbuster.
