Actor Lee Byung-hun has made history as the first Korean actor nominated for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globe Awards with the film “No Choice” (directed by Park Chan-wook). His witty interview has also drawn significant attention.
On December 8 (local time), the Golden Globe Foundation and Dick Clark Productions announced Lee’s nomination for the 83rd Golden Globe Awards. He faces stiff competition from Timothée Chalamet (“Marty Supreme”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“One Battle After Another”), George Clooney (“Jay Kelly”), Ethan Hawke (“Blue Moon”), and Jesse Plemons (“Bugonia”).
In an interview with Toofab on December 17, Lee Byung-hun said, “Being nominated is a huge honor in itself. I heard that I am the first Korean actor nominated for Best Actor, and I was very happy to hear the news.”
When asked about his strategy for the upcoming Oscars race, he joked, “I have my plans,” adding, “It’s to eliminate the other candidates.” He quickly clarified, “It’s a joke. I’m sorry,” but playfully warned his competitors, “Be careful.”
In the film “No Choice,” Lee’s character Mansu eliminates competitors in the job market after losing his job—an angle Lee cleverly referenced.
