Fireworks and Bare Skin at the Club: Jennie’s Lingerie Party Sparks Debate Over ‘Disappointment’ vs. ‘What’s the Problem’

BLACKPINK’s Jennie has sparked mixed reactions online after footage of her birthday party surfaced.

On January 17, a video titled “Celebrating Jennie’s Birthday in Japan” appeared on X (formerly Twitter).

The video showed Jennie dancing to music in a club-like setting, swaying her hips and performing movements that accentuated her body.

As the video rapidly spread, online communities engaged in widespread discussion. Behind Jennie, women dressed in black stockings and garter belts, described as “champagne girls,” were seen popping champagne bottles.

Some netizens voiced discomfort with what they perceived as a typical club culture that objectifies women, criticizing the influential idol for partaking in such a scene.

Safety emerged as another critical concern. A recent incident in Switzerland highlighted these worries, where a fire, reportedly caused by portable fireworks attached to a champagne bottle igniting the ceiling, resulted in over 40 deaths and more than 100 injuries at a club.

Concerns intensified regarding Jennie’s video, which also depicted sparkling fireworks from a champagne bottle shooting towards the ceiling.

Reactions were sharply divided. Critics stated, “The women’s outfits seem excessive,” “I don’t understand the culture of scantily-clad women cheering,” “It’s hard to accept club culture,” “Is this really necessary?” “It could be harmful to young fans who look up to Jennie,” and “Her actions are increasingly disappointing.”

Conversely, defenders argued, “There’s nothing particularly wrong,” “It’s merely a matter of taste,” and “The criticism appears excessive.”

Previously, Jennie faced controversy for smoking indoors while having her makeup done. The issue wasn’t solely the smoking itself, but also the fact that staff members were exposed to the smoke, leading to accusations of misconduct.

Amidst these controversies, Jennie has once again found herself in the spotlight.

Meanwhile, Jennie is currently hosting her inaugural photo exhibition, “JENNIE PHOTO EXHIBITION ‘J2NNI5’,” from January 16 to 29 at Youthquake in Jongno-gu, Seoul. She is also releasing a limited edition photo book, which has garnered significant fan interest.
