Cha Eun-woo Faces Military Band Reassignment Petition Amid Tax Controversy, Defense Ministry’s Distancing

The Ministry of Defense has set Cha Eun-woo’s promotional videos to private; this move prompted a petition for his reassignment from the military band.

Last year, the Seoul Regional Tax Office subjected Cha Eun-woo to an intensive tax audit over tax evasion allegations, notifying him of approximately 20 billion won in back taxes.

Although the tax evasion claims remain unresolved, advertisers, including fashion brands, banks, and beauty companies, have distanced themselves from Cha Eun-woo.

Moreover, the Defense Media Agency, which operates KFN, has made all videos featuring Cha during his military service private, a move that suggests the Ministry of Defense is distancing itself from him.

On the 28th, an online user filed a public petition requesting a review of Cha Eun-woo’s position in the military band, citing concerns over military trust and soldier morale.

The petitioner stated, “The issue could impact military trust and soldier morale.” They added, “Compared to regular positions, assignments in the military band require a higher level of scrutiny regarding appropriateness and risk management due to their impact on external trust, representation, and soldier morale.”

They argued, “Even with ongoing tax procedures, the seriousness and potential impact of the issue necessitate a proactive review of Private Cha Eun-woo (Lee Dong-min)’s role in the military band to protect military honor and morale.”

During a call with a Ministry public service representative, the petitioner was informed that “the case has been forwarded to the inspection office of the affiliated unit,” and that “actions are taken when investigations or verification of facts are necessary.”

Regarding the tax evasion allegations, Cha Eun-woo’s agency stated, “The matter is currently being reviewed by tax authorities, and both the agency and the artist are cooperating fully within the necessary limits of the investigation.” They added, “Once legal and administrative judgments are reached, we will responsibly implement the necessary actions according to the outcome.”

Cha Eun-woo himself said, “Although I’m serving in the military, I did not enlist to evade the controversy. I could not postpone my enlistment further and had to join the military before completing the tax procedure.” He emphasized, “I will sincerely comply with any ongoing tax procedures and will accept and fulfill any responsibilities based on the final judgments of the relevant agencies.”
