‘Monthly Boyfriend’ is set to premiere on March 6, promising a romantic comedy that blends relatable reality with dopamine-boosting romance. The Netflix series centers on Mirae, a webtoon PD portrayed by Jisoo, who seeks romance through a virtual dating simulation to escape her exhausting real life.
The series title, “Monthly Boyfriend,” also refers to an in-show virtual dating subscription service, offering dreamlike dates in a virtual world. This unique premise offers thrilling anticipation, built upon a relatable portrayal of everyday working life.
Anticipation is high for the pairing of Jisoo, returning as her down-to-earth character, and Seo In-guk, known as a ‘chemistry master.’ Jisoo perfectly embodies the relatable character of Mirae, whose bright and casual image resonates with viewers. Seo In-guk, celebrated for his captivating chemistry in romance series, showcases a new charm. As webtoon PDs, they become intriguing colleagues who become more entangled the harder they try to stay apart.
Jisoo portrays Mirae, an office worker overwhelmed by real life who has sidelined love and romance. In released photos, Mirae appears weary on her commute, donning noise-canceling headphones and dozing off—a familiar sight for the average worker.
Another image captures her shivering outdoors in midwinter, a dynamic yet somewhat pitiful glimpse into her reality. Her curiosity peaks as she dons the ‘Monthly Boyfriend’ device, hinting at the thrilling and romantic experiences awaiting her in virtual reality.

Seo In-guk’s character, Kyungnam, also heightens anticipation with his captivating charm. Kyungnam is an accomplished webtoon PD at Naemo Studio, yet he remains an ‘unreadable’ colleague Mirae wishes to avoid. His photo radiates an intense ‘workaholic’ aura, yet his indifferent gaze at Mirae still conveys a subtle distance.
In contrast, a seemingly intoxicated Kyungnam displays an adorable, unexpected side, raising expectations for his multifaceted charm.
Jisoo piqued curiosity, stating, “Mirae is an average youth, earnestly trying to find happiness in her own time. I believed she was a universally relatable character, so I focused genuinely on portraying her emotions.”
Seo In-guk described Kyungnam as “a character with meticulousness within his bluntness,” and hinted at exciting developments for the characters: “There’s a twist, and it’s fun, so please look forward to it.”
Director Kim Jeong-sik, who helms ‘Monthly Boyfriend,’ highlighted the main attraction: “The process of Mirae’s growth and her evolving relationship with Kyungnam.” The director remarked, “After experiencing real-life romantic heartbreak, Mirae heals and gains the courage to love again by experiencing the virtual world of ‘Monthly Boyfriend.’ I believe viewers will empathize with Mirae’s emotions and naturally root for her on this journey.”
Netflix will release ‘Monthly Boyfriend’ on March 6.
