Attention is focusing on whether actress Jisoo, who continues to thrive in her acting career, will find her masterpiece.
Netflix will release the original series ‘Monthly Boyfriend’ on March 6. In this romantic comedy, Jisoo plays Mirae, a webtoon PD exhausted by real life, who subscribes to and experiences romance through a virtual dating simulation.
In the series, ‘Monthly Boyfriend’ is a virtual dating subscription service offering 900 themed dates. With a simple device, anyone can enter the virtual world and start dating. Mirae, played by Jisoo, uses ‘Monthly Boyfriend’ to explore various worlds, professions, and romantic experiences.
Since her debut in JTBC’s ‘Snowdrop’ in 2021, Jisoo has been active in her acting career, appearing in films like ‘Dr. Cheon and the Lost Talisman’, ‘Omniscient Reader’, and Coupang Play’s ‘Newtopia’.
Nevertheless, critics have consistently labeled her acting as “poor,” citing unclear pronunciation, awkward expressions, and other issues.
Following the release of the ‘Monthly Boyfriend’ trailer, YouTube comments reflected mixed reactions. Some expressed high expectations, stating, “Jisoo’s diction seems to have improved,” while others offered critiques such as “Her acting hasn’t progressed,” and “In content centered around a single main character, their acting skills are crucial, but expectations are low.”
During the production presentation for ‘Monthly Boyfriend’ held on the 26th, Director Kim Jung-sik highlighted Jisoo’s significant role, stating that “Jisoo appears in more than 95% of the film.”
He added, “He gave her various settings and characters, and she managed to handle them all. She worked hard, showing that effort can surpass talent. She performed excellently on set, starting and ending with a smile. I would love to work with her as an assistant director because she put in so much effort.”
Jisoo addressed the acting controversy, stating, “Since I played different roles in each project, I spoke a lot with the director to show an even better side this time.”
She continued, “While playing characters of my age, I pondered how I could act naturally, as if I were wearing a perfectly fitting outfit. I hope viewers acknowledge that the character fits me this time.”
Director Kim Jung-sik reiterated, “I believe Jisoo put in a lot of effort and managed to embody various setups and characters effectively. Audiences will not only witness character growth in the drama but also see Jisoo’s growth as an actress. Again, effort surpassed talent.”
