‘The Running Man’ Opens in 6 Days: Action by Glen Powell and Reimagined World of Stephen King

Movie 'The Running Man'

The movie ‘The Running Man’ has unveiled key points ahead of its release.

‘The Running Man’ is a thrilling action blockbuster that follows the story of Ben Richards (played by Glen Powell), an unemployed family man, who must survive 30 days against brutal hunters in a global survival program to win a hefty prize.

The first point of interest is Glen Powell’s explosive action performance.

Performing most of the action sequences himself, Glen Powell, after being confirmed for ‘The Running Man’, captured attention by receiving direct tips from Tom Cruise, his collaborator from ‘Top Gun: Maverick’. They reportedly had a two-hour call discussing action know-how.

Glen Powell, who heeded Tom Cruise’s realistic advice that “stunts are not acting but involve real pain, require thorough body conditioning, and should be respected as an art form,” adds vibrancy to the film with his fearless stunt performances.

Director Bong Joon-ho praised the action scenes in the movie, saying, “It feels closer to the sweat-scented action of the working class, rather than showcasing stunt feats. The character Ben Richards, filled with rage, matches well with Glen Powell’s aura,” raising expectations with the realistic action acting of Glen Powell that projects a down-to-earth charm.

The second highlight is the world setting that resonates with the times.

In ‘The Running Man’s world, deepfakes are prevalent, distributing manipulated videos that distort public perception, and the powerful corporation “Network” surveils individuals’ privacy through “FreeV” televisions distributed to all households. This setting, directly reflecting the original novel written by Stephen King over 40 years ago, astonishes viewers.

Director Edgar Wright has modernized this original setting with contemporary insights, building a dystopia where the polarization of social structures is vividly highlighted.

The Running Man’, enriched with detailed production design, subtle yet dynamic cinematography, and immersive music, will resonate with today’s reality, leaving a lasting impression on audiences.

The third point is the brilliant synergy of the distinctively individualistic cast.

William H. Macy, known for his versatile acting in ‘Jurassic Park III’ and ‘Magnolia’, adds depth by playing Molly, a confidant of Ben Richards who struggles between friendship and reality.

Lee Pace, who displayed a powerful presence in ‘The Fall: Odious and the Door of Fantasy’ and the ‘Hobbit’ series, plays McCone, leader of the hunters who relentlessly pursue Ben Richards, showcasing his unique aura.

Coleman Domingo, who recently voiced the ‘Cowardly Lion’ in ‘Wicked: For Good’, brings a new charm as Bobby T, the star host of ‘The Running Man’ program. Josh Brolin, known for his intense villain roles like Thanos in the ‘Avengers’ series, portrays Dan Killian, the head of ‘The Running Man’, bringing a gravitas to the film.

With such a diverse lineup of talented actors, ‘The Running Man’ promises to offer even more rich entertainment and tension.

‘The Running Man’ premieres on the 10th.
