Singer BoA has parted ways with SM Entertainment after a 25-year partnership since her debut, making her a highly anticipated free agent.
SM Entertainment announced on the 12th that its exclusive contract with BoA had concluded. BoA had previously stated on her personal account in April of last year that her contract was “until December 31, 2025,” which led to speculation about a potential renewal.
However, both SM and BoA chose not to renew the contract. SM stated, “BoA, who debuted at age 13 in 2000, pioneered the Korean Wave across Asia as an ‘Icon of International Expansion’ and ‘Asian Star’.” The agency added, “Although our exclusive contract has ended, we hope she will continue to shine in her new ventures and challenges as the ‘Star of Asia’.”
Additionally, her YouTube channel posted a tribute video chronicling BoA’s journey from debut to the present that day.

The description for the video reads, “We sincerely support every moment of BoA, who will forever shine as No. 1.” The video concludes with the caption, “For 25 years, BoA has been a dream for many, and we sincerely support every moment of BoA, who will forever shine as No. 1,” conveying SM’s affection and support for her future after the contract’s conclusion.
BoA also expressed gratitude on her account, stating, “I leave without regrets, having given and received generously. I am grateful for the time shared and will continue to support the shining SM Entertainment. Thank you.”
Conversely, tape with the repeated word ‘Return’ over BoA’s name sculpture, where she was seated, drew attention. Some interpreted this as reflecting BoA’s complex emotions, juxtaposed with her ‘Thank you’ message.

Many highly anticipate her future moves, especially since BoA had previously hinted at retirement. She posted, “Now that the contract is over, can I finally retire?” While the expression ‘운퇴’ (oontwe) initially caused mixed interpretations, she later clarified it to ‘은퇴’ (euntwe), meaning ‘retirement.’
BoA demonstrated her production skills by participating in the overall production of NCT Wish, one of SM’s rookie groups. Many anticipate she may pursue a second career as an actress or producer rather than continuing as a singer.
Given that she was discovered by SM founder Lee Soo-man, many are strongly considering a move to A20 Entertainment, a global entertainment company he recently established. Some former SM artists and associates, including Sunny of Girls’ Generation, have already joined the company.
BoA has not yet officially announced her future plans. Amid various speculations, many are focusing attention on her next steps.
