Netflix subtitles proved to be a significant aid for actress Go Youn-jung.
Go Youn-jung stars as global top star Cha Moo-hee in the Netflix series ‘Can This Love Be Interpreted?’, which premiered on January 12. The series is an unpredictable romantic comedy drama in which multilingual interpreter Ju Ho-jin (played by Kim Seon-ho) becomes Cha Moo-hee’s personal interpreter.
In the drama, Cha Moo-hee is a character with deep childhood wounds who conceals them as she navigates life. Her unpredictable, innocent yet candid nature enhances her charm as a top star. Go Youn-jung successfully portrayed these characteristics, capturing the unique atmosphere of the romantic comedy genre.

Her intense performance, akin to playing dual roles, also garnered attention. Following an accident, Cha Moo-hee faces a crisis caused by the emergence of another personality, ‘Do-ra-mi.’ Initially appearing only in imagination, Do-ra-mi eventually overtakes Cha Moo-hee’s body by the drama’s midpoint. Go Youn-jung was tasked with portraying Cha Moo-hee, Do-ra-mi, and Do-ra-mi inhabiting Cha Moo-hee’s body. Her portrayal of Do-ra-mi, which could have easily been over-the-top, was well-balanced.
However, her chronic issues with pronunciation and voice projection remained unresolved. Despite effectively conveying the character’s appeal and emotions, her unclear dialogue frustrated viewers, who struggled to comprehend lines during critical moments.

Fortunately, ‘Can This Love Be Interpreted?’ is a Netflix series that provides subtitles, a feature from which Go Youn-jung greatly benefited. Had the series aired on traditional television, it might not have received the same favorable reviews.
While her visuals and emotional acting garnered praise, Netflix’s readily available subtitles barely concealed her vocal weaknesses. Through this work, Go Youn-jung expanded her acting range. She will need to show further improvements in future projects.
