Details have emerged regarding the tragic circumstances surrounding the death of Gu Jun-yeop’s wife, the late Barbie Hsu.
KBS 2TV’s program ‘Secrets of Celebrity Soldiers,’ which aired on the 3rd, highlighted the story of Gu Jun-yeop and the late Barbie Hsu, a couple who miraculously reunited with a first love.
Hsu and Gu Jun-yeop first met in 1998, dating for a year before parting ways.
Hsu later married businessman Wang Xiaofei, with whom she had a son and a daughter, but they divorced in 2021. She then reunited with Gu Jun-yeop after more than 20 years, and they officially became a couple in 2022.
Upon learning of Hsu’s divorce, Gu Jun-yeop decided to call her after 20 years. She answered, rekindling their relationship.
Gu Jun-yeop announced his marriage to Hsu via social media, stating, “I am continuing the love I couldn’t complete with the woman I loved 20 years ago.” He revealed they registered their marriage and became a couple.
Their reunion after 20 years became a sensation in Taiwan, sparking a trend of ‘not changing phone numbers.’
When they reconnected, Gu Jun-yeop was unable to travel to Taiwan due to COVID-19 restrictions. However, family members could enter, so he proposed to Hsu via video call and officially married her.
Gu Jun-yeop lovingly cared for Hsu, who was weakened by mitral valve prolapse, a congenital heart condition, and pre-eclampsia that had put her into a coma during childbirth. He cooked for her and became her ‘real’ family.
Despite attempts by Hsu’s ex-husband to spread rumors about them, Gu Jun-yeop successfully quelled them by continuing his local DJ activities.
Tragedy, however, struck suddenly. On January 29 of last year, Hsu experienced a decline in her health while on a family trip to Japan.
Her heart stopped on the way to the airport. She was rushed to a nearby hospital and received 14 hours of intensive care, but she ultimately passed away.
At the time of her death, Gu Jun-yeop expressed, “My angel has returned to heaven. I am going through an indescribable period of sadness and pain, like my heart is being torn apart.” On February 2, marking a year since her passing, he continues to visit her grave every morning, paying his respects to Hsu.
The ‘Secrets of Celebrity Soldiers’ production team revealed that Gu Jun-yeop left a prepared breakfast at her grave and watched a video of Hsu on his tablet, wiping away tears from afar.
He politely declined the production team’s request for an interview, shedding tears instead. He expressed his wish for Hsu to be remembered by those who loved her, announcing the unveiling of a statue.
