IU and Byun Woo-seok star in ’21st Century Royal Spouse,’ which officially launches today (6th).
The new MBC Friday-Saturday drama ’21st Century Royal Spouse’ is holding a press conference today (6th).
IU and Byun Woo-seok, along with the main cast, will discuss the project at the press event. The press anticipates their real-time chemistry during their joint appearance.

Set in a 21st-century South Korea with a constitutional monarchy, the drama portrays the romance between a wealthy woman whose commoner status is an obstacle, and a prince who, despite his royal lineage, possesses nothing.
In the drama, IU plays Sung Hee-joo, a conglomerate heiress with everything except social status, while Byun Woo-seok portrays Prince Ian, the royal family’s second son who enters a contract marriage despite having nothing to his name.
Byun Woo-seok returns with this drama after rising to stardom in 2024 with tvN’s ‘Lovely Runner.’ IU also garnered significant attention, as it’s her first role after her dual performance in Netflix’s ‘When Life Gives You Tangerines.’

Leveraging the high profile and buzz surrounding the two actors, ’21st Century Royal Spouse’ is highly anticipated even before its broadcast.
They have been building excitement with various promotional activities, such as appearing together on the web variety show ‘Pinggyego’ and through photo shoots and interviews.
However, SBS’s competing drama ‘God and Law Office’ maintains stable viewership ratings of around 10%, and its plot is reaching its climax, posing a challenge.
Additionally, online debate arose regarding Byun Woo-seok’s acting skills in the teaser video.

Despite this, the innovative concept, star power, and stunning visuals and scale of ’21st Century Royal Spouse’ continue to generate buzz and anticipation with each piece of released content.
It remains to be seen if this pre-airing interest will translate into actual viewership. ’21st Century Royal Spouse,’ one of the most anticipated works of the first half of the year, premieres on Friday, the 10th, at 9:40 PM.
